The System 7 Pack! allows you to customize your Finder. In order to work its magic, it has to change resources in the Finder. Some virus programs become suspicious of such activity and may prevent the System 7 Pack! from making necessary changes. Unfortunately, virus programs that stop the System 7 Pack! in the middle of installation may cause Finder corruption.
Happily, there is a solution! Simply turn off your virus programs when you use the System 7 Pack! to make changes. Or, if your virus program allows it, grant the System 7 Pack! the necessary privileges to change resources in the Finder. (Once you make your changes, you can continue to use your virus programs. It’s only necessary to turn them off before you make changes with the System 7 Pack!)
You might want to copy your Finder onto a floppy before you use the System 7 Pack! (Even easier, simply go to the System Folder, select the Finder file, and press command key-D to duplicate it. Then you’ll have a Finder copy that you can always use as a replacement.)
Although problems are rare, it is always possible that a corruption could occur from a power outage in the middle of a save operation. This way, if something does go wrong, all you have to do is boot up from a different startup disk and replace the corrupted Finder with your backup Finder.
Dimmed items are not available on your System. The System 7 Pack! completes a very thorough check of your system and will dim any items that it does not feel comfortable applying to your system. Please contact me if any of the items are dimmed on your system.
Running the System 7 Pack:
Double Click on the System 7 Pack! icon to launch the program. You might (depending on how the settings are set) see a dialog box that asks you if you want to quit the Finder. Quitting the Finder allows you to customize the Finder on your startup disk. 99% of System 7 Pack! users, including myself, choose this option. Just click on the Yes button. If the dialog box doesn't show up, please ignore what you just read and continue on.
Once you’re finished making changes, quit the System 7 Pack.
When you quit all open applications, your Finder will return. I recommend running the System 7 Pack! without any other open applications. That way, you can just quit the System 7 Pack! to return to your Finder. You can also use one of the many launching utilities to launch the Finder yourself so that you do not have to quit all open applications to regain the Finder. Also, please note that your desk accessories will disappear when you run the System 7 Pack! This is completely normal, and due to the temporary absence of the Finder. Your desk accessories will return as soon as you quit the System 7 Pack! and all open applications.
